Tattoo removal used to mean surgery or dermabrasion. Now it means laser. The technology has improved significantly over the past decade. Results that once took years of aggressive treatment are now achievable in fewer sessions with less discomfort and less risk of scarring.
But there is still a lot of misinformation around what removal actually involves. This guide gives you the honest picture — how the laser works, what affects fading speed, realistic session numbers, and pricing at our clinics in North York and Richmond Hill.
How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?
Laser tattoo removal uses concentrated light energy to break up the ink particles embedded in the dermis. The laser targets the pigment specifically. The surrounding skin tissue absorbs minimal energy, which is what keeps the process safe when performed correctly.
When the ink particles absorb the laser energy, they shatter into smaller fragments. The body's immune system then processes and eliminates those fragments gradually over the following weeks. Each session breaks down another layer of ink. The tattoo fades progressively rather than disappearing all at once.
How Many Sessions Does Tattoo Removal Take?
This is the question everyone asks first. The honest answer is that it depends on several factors. There is no universal number that applies to every tattoo.
Ink Colours
Black and dark blue ink absorbs laser energy most efficiently and responds fastest. Green, purple, and yellow inks are more resistant and typically require more sessions. Multicoloured tattoos take longer than single-colour ones.
Ink Density and Age
Professional tattoos use more ink applied more deeply than amateur tattoos. They take more sessions to clear. Older tattoos have already experienced some natural fading and tend to respond faster than newer ones.
Tattoo Size and Location
Larger tattoos require more sessions. Location also matters because areas with better blood circulation flush broken-down ink particles more efficiently. Tattoos on the torso and upper arms tend to fade faster than those on the hands, feet, or fingers.
Skin Tone
Lighter skin tones allow the laser to target ink pigment more precisely. Darker skin tones require adjusted settings and sometimes a different laser wavelength to achieve safe, effective treatment.
As a general guide, most tattoos require between six and twelve sessions. Smaller, older, single-colour tattoos may clear in four to six. Large, professional, multicoloured tattoos may need ten or more. Maryam gives you a realistic estimate after examining the tattoo at consultation.
Eyebrow and Eyeliner Tattoo Removal
Cosmetic tattoo removal is one of the most common requests at our Toronto clinics. The pigments used in cosmetic tattooing differ from traditional body tattoo inks, so they fade differently.
Eyebrow Tattoo Removal
Eyebrow tattoo removal starts at $119 per session. This includes microblading, powder brows, and ombre brow treatments. Laser removal is the most effective method currently available for fading or correcting cosmetic brow tattoos.
Eyeliner Tattoo Removal
Eyeliner tattoo removal starts at $249 per session due to the precision required and the proximity to the eye.
What Does a Tattoo Removal Session Feel Like?
The laser pulse feels like a rubber band snapping against the skin. Sessions are short — a small tattoo may take five to ten minutes, a larger one thirty to forty-five.
Immediately After the Session
The treated area may appear white or frosted. This is a normal reaction that resolves within twenty to thirty minutes, followed by redness and mild swelling that typically clears within a few days.
Between Sessions
A minimum of six to eight weeks between sessions is standard. The body needs this time to process and eliminate the broken-down ink fragments. Going too soon does not produce faster results and increases the risk of skin damage.
