Acne Treatment in Toronto: What Actually Works and Where to Get It

Active breakouts and acne scars are two completely different conditions. They need different treatments. Treating them the same way is why so many people spend months trying products that never fully work.

This guide separates the two, explains what actually works for each, and covers what is available at our clinics in North York and Richmond Hill.

Active Acne vs Acne Scars: Why the Distinction Matters

Active acne is a live inflammatory process. Bacteria, excess oil production, and blocked follicles create breakouts in real time. The goal of treatment is to reduce inflammation, clear congestion, and stop new breakouts from forming.

Acne scars are the aftermath. They form when inflammation damages the collagen structure beneath the skin, leaving a permanent depressed or textured mark. No amount of anti-acne treatment will improve a scar because a scar is not an active process. It is damaged tissue that needs rebuilding.

The most common mistake is using scar-targeting treatments on active skin, or continuing anti-acne products for months after breakouts have cleared instead of switching focus to scar treatment.

Treatments for Active Acne at Sonia Cosmetic

Anti-Acne Facial

Our anti-acne facial is designed for clients with active breakouts. It combines deep cleansing, professional extraction, and targeted active ingredients including salicylic acid and antibacterial agents that address both congestion and the bacteria responsible for inflammatory acne.

Session time is 60 minutes. Starts at $89. Available at both our North York acne clinic and Richmond Hill acne clinic.

HydraFacial for Acne Congestion

For clients whose acne is primarily comedonal — blackheads, whiteheads, and congested pores rather than deep cysts — HydraFacial is a highly effective option. The vortex extraction step clears pore congestion more thoroughly than manual extraction, and the serum infusion helps regulate oiliness over time.

Light Therapy for Active Acne

Blue light therapy targets the bacteria responsible for inflammatory acne without any systemic side effects. We offer light therapy as a standalone treatment and combined with microdermabrasion. It is particularly useful for clients who want to reduce active breakouts between facial sessions.

Green Peel

The Green Peel is a herbal-based treatment that stimulates circulation and accelerates skin renewal. It is effective for acne-prone skin and mild hyperpigmentation left by old breakouts. It suits a wide range of skin types including sensitive skin.

Microneedling

Microneedling is the most effective non-surgical treatment for atrophic acne scars — the depressed, pitted type that most people are trying to reduce. By creating controlled micro-injuries in the dermis, it triggers collagen production in the scar tissue itself, gradually filling in the depression over multiple sessions.

Standard microneedling starts at $149. RF Gold Microneedling starts at $249. Both are available at our microneedling North York and microneedling Richmond Hill clinics.

Realistic expectations matter here. A protocol of four to six sessions spaced four weeks apart produces meaningful, visible improvement in most acne scars. It does not erase them entirely.

Microdermabrasion with Light Therapy

For very shallow surface scarring and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — the dark marks left after breakouts — microdermabrasion combined with light therapy is an effective and affordable option.

The combined session is $69. Available at both our microdermabrasion North York and microdermabrasion Richmond Hill locations.

Dedicated Acne Scar Treatment

Our acne scar treatment at $199 combines multiple modalities in a single session for clients with more significant scarring. Available at both locations and discussed in full at your consultation.

Which Acne Treatment Is Right for You?

  • Active breakouts, mostly blackheads and whiteheads: HydraFacial or anti-acne facial

  • Active inflammatory acne with red pustules: anti-acne facial with light therapy

  • Post-acne dark marks and shallow surface texture: microdermabrasion with light therapy

  • Depressed atrophic acne scars: microneedling protocol of four to six sessions

  • Both active acne and scarring at the same time: anti-acne facial now, microneedling once breakouts are under control

Maryam assesses your skin at consultation and gives you a direct recommendation. She does not push treatments you do not need.

How Long Does Acne Treatment Take to Work?

For Active Acne

Most clients see improvement after two to three anti-acne facial sessions. HydraFacial results are visible immediately for congestion, with longer-term regulation over four to six weeks of regular sessions.

For Acne Scars

Microneedling results build over months. Most clients notice visible improvement after three sessions. Significant scar reduction becomes apparent after a full protocol of four to six sessions, with continued improvement for several months afterward as collagen remodelling continues.
