Skin loosens. It happens slowly, and then one day it becomes hard to ignore.
Jowls start forming. The brow feels heavier. The jawline that used to be sharp becomes soft. For most people in Toronto, the question eventually becomes: is there something that actually lifts skin without surgery?
HIFU is one of the few treatments with a real answer to that question. Not a filler, not a temporary fix, not a surface-level treatment. It works at a structural level, deep beneath the skin, where lifting actually originates.
This guide covers what HIFU is, how the treatment works, what results look like, and what to expect at our clinics in North York and Richmond Hill.
What is HIFU?
HIFU stands for High Intensity Focused Ultrasound. It delivers focused ultrasound energy to a precise depth beneath the skin surface, typically 3 to 4.5 millimetres, depending on the treatment zone.
That depth matters more than anything else about this treatment.
At 4.5mm, HIFU reaches the SMAS layer. The SMAS is the structural foundation of the face. It is the layer surgeons physically lift during traditional facelift surgery. It is where real facial support lives.
When HIFU energy reaches the SMAS, it creates controlled thermal injury points. The body responds by producing collagen to repair those points. That collagen production is what creates the lifting effect over the following weeks and months.
No needles. No incisions. No anaesthetic. No recovery time.
HIFU is the only non-invasive treatment that reaches the SMAS layer. That single fact is what separates it from every other non-surgical skin tightening option on the market.
Who is a good candidate for HIFU?
HIFU works best for people with mild to moderate skin laxity. Good candidates typically notice:
A softening jawline or early jowls
Heaviness or drooping around the brow
Loose skin along the neck
General loss of facial definition and firmness
Fine lines on the neck and decolletage
It is not the right treatment for severe laxity where surgery may be a better option. Active skin infections, certain implanted devices, and pregnancy are contraindications. Maryam assesses each client individually before recommending treatment.
What does a HIFU session actually look like?
Whether you come to our North York clinic at 250 Sheppard Ave E or our Richmond Hill clinic at 23 John Greene Ln, the process is the same.
The consultation
Maryam examines your skin, identifies the areas that will respond best, and calibrates the treatment settings. This takes about ten minutes and sets the entire session up correctly.
Skin mapping and gel application
A coupling gel is applied to the treatment area. The handpiece depth is set based on each zone. Upper face typically uses a 3.0mm setting. Lower face and neck use 4.5mm where deeper SMAS lifting is the goal.
Ultrasound delivery
The handpiece moves across mapped zones in precise lines. You will feel warmth and in some areas a tingling sensation as energy reaches the SMAS layer. Most people describe it as uncomfortable but manageable. A full face session takes 60 to 90 minutes.
After the session
You leave. That is it. Some clients have mild redness for a few hours. Most return to work, errands, or the gym the same day. There is nothing to recover from.
How long does it take to see HIFU results?
Results build gradually because they come from your body producing collagen, not from an injected substance.
Most clients start noticing a change at four to six weeks. Full results are typically visible around the three-month mark as collagen production peaks. The lifting looks natural because it is natural. No puffiness. No frozen expression.
Results from a single session last 12 to 24 months. Maintenance sessions every 12 to 18 months sustain the effect long term.
How many HIFU sessions do I need?
One session produces meaningful results for most clients. HIFU is not a treatment where you need to commit to a series of six sessions before seeing anything.
Maryam will give you an honest assessment at your consultation based on your degree of skin laxity and your goals. She does not recommend treatment people do not need.
HIFU cost in Toronto
At Sonia Cosmetic Clinic, HIFU pricing is:
Targeted single zone (forehead, cheeks, jawline, or neck): from $149
Full face: $249
Full face and neck combined: $349
Compare that to surgical facelifts in Toronto which typically run $8,000 to $15,000 with weeks of recovery. For clients in the mild-to-moderate laxity range, HIFU delivers comparable lifting at a fraction of the cost.

HIFU vs other non-surgical treatments
HIFU vs RF microneedling
Both trigger collagen production. RF microneedling works at the superficial dermis level and is excellent for skin texture, pore size, and acne scars. HIFU goes significantly deeper and produces structural lifting rather than surface improvement. For sagging skin, HIFU is the stronger choice. For texture and scarring, microneedling in North York or microneedling in Richmond Hill is the appropriate option.
HIFU vs HydraFacial
These do entirely different things. A HydraFacial is a surface cleansing and hydration treatment. It cannot lift tissue. If your goal is surface brightness and hydration, our HydraFacial North York and HydraFacial Richmond Hill pages cover that option. If your goal is structural lifting, HIFU is the treatment.
HIFU vs Botox
Botox relaxes muscles to soften expression lines. It cannot address sagging tissue or structural laxity. The two treatments target different problems and work well together for clients who want to address both fine lines and skin laxity.
Frequently asked questions about HIFU in Toronto
Is HIFU painful?
Most clients describe it as uncomfortable rather than painful. Sensation is strongest when the energy reaches the SMAS layer, particularly along the jawline. It stops the moment the session ends. No anaesthetic is needed.
Can I combine HIFU with other treatments?
Yes, and many clients do. Common combinations at our North York medical spa and Richmond Hill medical spa include HIFU for lifting, microneedling for texture, and HydraFacial for surface maintenance between deeper treatments.
Is HIFU safe for all skin tones?
Yes. Unlike some laser treatments, HIFU uses ultrasound energy which is not affected by skin pigmentation. It is safe across all Fitzpatrick skin types.
