Laser Hair Removal in Toronto: The Complete Guide to Sessions, Cost, and Results

Laser hair removal gets sold as a quick fix. Six sessions, done, hair gone forever. The reality is a bit more layered than that, and knowing how it actually works helps you set realistic expectations before you book.

This guide covers how the laser actually targets hair, what affects how many sessions you need, what results really look like over time, and pricing at our clinics in North York and Richmond Hill.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Actually Work?

The laser targets melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color. When the laser pulse hits the hair, the pigment absorbs the light energy and converts it into heat. That heat travels down the hair shaft to the follicle, the structure beneath the skin responsible for growing new hair, and damages it enough to prevent regrowth.

This is the part most people do not realize. The laser cannot target a hair follicle that is not actively growing hair. Hair grows in cycles, and at any given time, only a portion of the hair in a treated area is in the active growth phase. The rest is dormant or shedding. That is the entire reason this treatment requires multiple sessions rather than one.

Why You Need Multiple Sessions

Each session only catches the follicles that happen to be in active growth at that exact moment. A few weeks later, a different batch of follicles enters the growth phase, and those need to be caught in the next session.

Over a series of sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, you eventually catch most of the follicles in a given area during their active phase, which is what produces the long-term reduction.

Most areas require six to eight sessions for significant, lasting reduction. Some areas with denser or more stubborn hair, like the underarms or bikini area, sometimes need eight to ten.

What Affects How Many Sessions You Need?

Hair Color and Thickness

Dark, coarse hair contains more melanin and responds fastest to laser treatment. Fine, light, or blonde hair contains less melanin and is naturally more resistant, sometimes requiring more sessions or producing less dramatic results overall.

Skin Tone

Lighter skin tones create the most contrast between hair pigment and skin pigment, allowing the laser to target the follicle precisely. Darker skin tones absorb more of the laser energy at the surface, which means settings need to be carefully adjusted to treat effectively without affecting the surrounding skin. Maryam adjusts laser settings specifically for your skin tone at every session, which matters for both safety and results.

Hormonal Factors

Hormonal conditions, including PCOS and certain medications, can cause hair to regrow more persistently than typical. Clients with hormonal hair growth patterns sometimes need maintenance sessions even after completing a full protocol.

Treatment Area

Areas with finer hair, like the upper lip, often clear faster than areas with coarser hair, like the underarms or legs. Larger areas also naturally take a full course of sessions simply because there is more surface area and more follicles to treat over time.

What Does a Session Actually Feel Like?

Most clients describe the sensation as a quick snap, similar to a rubber band against the skin. It is brief and tends to be most noticeable in areas with thinner skin, like the upper lip or bikini line, and less noticeable in areas like the legs or back.

Session length depends on the area. A small area like the upper lip takes a few minutes. A larger area like the full legs or full back can take thirty to forty-five minutes.

What Happens Immediately After Treatment?

The treated area is often slightly pink or warm for a few hours after the session, similar to mild sunburn. This usually settles within a day. Over the following one to three weeks, treated hairs shed naturally. This is a normal part of the process and should not be mistaken for regrowth.

Sun exposure should be avoided on the treated area both before and after each session, since tanned or sunburned skin is more sensitive to laser treatment and increases the risk of pigmentation changes.

Is the Reduction Permanent?

Laser hair removal produces a significant, long-lasting reduction in hair growth, not a guarantee that every single hair is gone forever. Most clients who complete a full protocol see eighty to ninety percent permanent reduction in the treated area.

The remaining hair tends to be finer and lighter, and many clients are satisfied stopping there. Some choose occasional maintenance sessions once or twice a year to manage the small percentage of hair that does regrow, particularly in areas affected by hormonal changes over time.

Laser Hair Removal Pricing in Toronto

At Sonia Cosmetic Clinic, pricing depends on the treatment area.

  • Full face: from $59

  • Bikini and Brazilian: from $59

  • Full body: from $249

  • Electrolysis: available for fine or light hair the laser cannot effectively target

Multiple sessions are required for lasting results, and the per-session price reflects that this is a process rather than a single visit. Confirm pricing for your specific areas at consultation.

Laser Hair Removal vs Electrolysis

Laser hair removal works best on dark, coarse hair against lighter skin. For very fine, light, or white hair, the laser has little pigment to target and is far less effective.

Electrolysis works differently. It uses a fine probe inserted directly into the follicle to deliver an electrical current, which means it does not depend on hair pigment at all. It is slower, since each hair is treated individually, but it works on hair colors and skin tones that laser struggles with.

We offer both at our clinics, and Maryam will recommend the right option based on your specific hair and skin during consultation.
