Microdermabrasion in Toronto: What It Does, Who Needs It, and What It Costs

Microdermabrasion has been a staple of professional skin care for decades. That staying power is not accidental. It is effective, it is accessible, and for the right skin concerns it delivers consistent, visible results.
The key phrase is the right skin concerns. Knowing what microdermabrasion actually does, and what it does not do, helps you decide whether it makes sense for your skin.
We offer microdermabrasion at both our North York clinic on Sheppard Ave E and our Richmond Hill clinic on John Greene Ln, paired with light therapy as a combined treatment.
What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is mechanical exfoliation. A device delivers a controlled abrasive surface across the skin while simultaneously suctioning away the exfoliated dead cells.
The target is the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of skin. When this layer of dead cells is removed thoroughly and evenly, the skin underneath appears brighter, smoother, and more even in tone. The suction component also stimulates blood flow and mildly activates collagen production in the layers below.
It is a surface treatment. It does not reach the dermis. It is not designed to. That surface focus is exactly what makes it right for certain concerns and wrong for others.
What does microdermabrasion treat well?
Dull, rough, or congested skin texture
Mild surface sun damage and uneven skin tone
Superficial fine lines
Very shallow acne scarring
Blackheads and congested pores
Dry skin that needs resurfacing
General skin maintenance between deeper treatments
Microdermabrasion is one of the best regular maintenance treatments available. It keeps the skin surface clear, bright, and receptive to other treatments. It is not the right choice for deep scarring, structural laxity, or significant pigmentation.
When microdermabrasion is not the right treatment
If your concerns live below the surface, microdermabrasion will not fully address them.
For deep acne scars, our microneedling North York and microneedling Richmond Hill treatments reach the dermis where scar tissue forms. For structural sagging and jowls, our HIFU North York and HIFU Richmond Hill treatments target the SMAS layer beneath the skin. For congestion combined with deep hydration, our HydraFacial North York and HydraFacial Richmond Hill combine exfoliation with simultaneous serum infusion.
Microdermabrasion is the right choice when your goal is surface maintenance, brightening, and general skin quality improvement.
Microdermabrasion with light therapy at Sonia Cosmetic
At both our North York and Richmond Hill locations, we offer microdermabrasion paired with light therapy as a combined session. The addition of light therapy addresses concerns that go slightly deeper than standard exfoliation alone can reach.
Red light wavelengths support collagen stimulation and skin repair. Blue light targets acne-causing bacteria beneath the skin surface. Together with microdermabrasion, the combination session addresses texture, brightness, acne, and early collagen improvement in a single 60-minute appointment.
The combined Microdermabrasion and Light Therapy session is $69 at both locations. It is one of the most affordable clinical skin treatments we offer and delivers genuinely good results for consistent users.
How often should you get microdermabrasion?
The skin's natural surface renewal cycle is approximately 28 days. Monthly sessions align with this cycle and maintain a consistently fresh surface layer.
For specific concerns like mild sun damage or surface hyperpigmentation, an initial series of four to six sessions spaced two to three weeks apart produces faster improvement. Monthly maintenance follows.
Microdermabrasion also works well as a regular treatment between deeper procedures. Many clients at our North York medical spa and Richmond Hill medical spa pair monthly microdermabrasion with quarterly microneedling sessions for comprehensive skin maintenance.
Is there any downtime?
No. The skin may appear mildly pink for a couple of hours after treatment. Most clients return to normal activities immediately.
Sunscreen is important in the days following treatment. Freshly resurfaced skin is more sensitive to UV exposure, and unprotected sun exposure after microdermabrasion can lead to pigmentation. This is one of the few post-care requirements.
