Microneedling in Toronto: The Honest Guide to Acne Scars, Texture, and RF Treatments

Acne scars do not respond to skincare products. Neither do enlarged pores, fine lines from skin laxity, or uneven texture caused by sun damage.

That is not because the products are bad. It is because the skin layer where these issues live is too deep for anything you apply to the surface to reach.

Microneedling reaches it.

At Sonia Cosmetic Clinic, we offer microneedling at both our North York clinic on Sheppard Ave E and our Richmond Hill clinic on John Greene Ln. This guide covers everything you need to know before booking.

How does microneedling work?

A device fitted with fine sterile needles creates thousands of microscopic channels in the skin. The depth is controlled and precise, typically 0.5 to 2.5mm depending on the concern being treated.

Those tiny punctures trigger the skin's repair response. The body floods the area with collagen and elastin. The result, over four to six weeks, is skin that is firmer, smoother, and more even in texture.

It sounds aggressive. In practice, a topical numbing cream applied beforehand makes the session tolerable for almost everyone. Most people describe the sensation as a mild vibration across the skin.

Microneedling works because it uses your own body's healing response. The micro-injuries are the trigger. Your collagen is the treatment.

What does microneedling treat well?

  • Atrophic acne scars, the indented pitted type

  • Rolling scars and shallow boxcar scars

  • Fine lines around the eyes, mouth, and forehead

  • Enlarged pores and rough uneven texture

  • Mild hyperpigmentation and sun damage

  • General loss of skin firmness

  • Stretch marks on the body

It is not appropriate for active acne breakouts, rosacea in an active phase, eczema, or psoriasis on the treatment area. Maryam assesses each client at consultation before recommending a protocol.

Standard microneedling vs RF microneedling: what is the difference?

Both use needles. The similarity ends there.

Standard microneedling

Creates channels in the dermis to stimulate collagen production. Excellent for texture improvement, superficial scarring, pore reduction, and general skin quality. Three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart produce the best outcomes for most concerns.

RF microneedling (Gold Microneedling)

Delivers radiofrequency energy directly through the needles into the dermis and sub-dermis as they penetrate the skin. The heat component adds a tightening and lifting effect on top of the collagen stimulus. This produces stronger results for more significant laxity and deeper scarring.

At Sonia Cosmetic, RF Fractional Gold Microneedling starts at $249. For clients whose primary concern is structural sagging rather than texture, our HIFU treatment in North York and HIFU in Richmond Hill targets an even deeper layer and produces more significant lifting.

Microneedling for acne scars in Toronto

This is the most common reason clients visit us for microneedling at both our North York and Richmond Hill locations.

Acne scars form when inflammation damages the collagen structure beneath the skin surface, leaving a depressed area. Microneedling addresses this by stimulating new collagen production in and around the scar tissue. Over multiple sessions, the depressed area fills in gradually.

Rolling scars and shallow boxcar scars respond best. Ice pick scars, which are very narrow and deep, are more resistant and may need additional interventions.

Be realistic about results. Microneedling reduces scar visibility. It does not eliminate scars entirely. Clients who complete a full protocol of four to six sessions see a meaningful improvement, one that genuinely affects how their skin looks in daily life.

For broader acne management including active breakouts, see our acne treatment North York page and acne treatment Richmond Hill page which cover the full range of options available at both clinics.

What to expect at your microneedling session

The process is the same at both our North York and Richmond Hill clinics.

  • Numbing cream is applied 30 to 45 minutes before the session starts

  • Maryam uses a sterile single-use cartridge device, passed systematically across the treatment area

  • A serum is applied during treatment to penetrate through the open channels

  • The session takes 45 to 60 minutes for the full face

  • Redness and mild swelling are normal for 24 to 48 hours

  • Most clients return to normal activities the following day

How many sessions do you need?

For general skin improvement and mild texture concerns, three sessions spaced four weeks apart is a standard starting protocol.

For deeper acne scars, four to six sessions produces more significant results.

Maryam gives you a realistic protocol based on what she sees at your consultation, not a package designed to maximise your spend. If three sessions will address your concern, she will tell you three.
