Botox is one of the most requested treatments in cosmetic medicine, and also one of the most misunderstood. People assume it freezes the face. Or that it is only for older clients. Or that one injection works the same everywhere.
None of that is quite right.
This guide explains what Botox actually does at a biological level, which areas respond best, what real results look like, and what to expect at our clinics in North York and Richmond Hill.
What Is Botox and How Does It Work?
Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin. It works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that tell a muscle to contract.
When a muscle cannot contract as strongly, the skin above it stops folding the same way. That is what softens a wrinkle. Botox does not fill anything in. It does not add volume. It simply relaxes the muscle responsible for the line in the first place.
This is the most important thing to understand before booking. Botox treats expression lines, the ones caused by repeated muscle movement like frowning or squinting. It does not treat sagging skin or volume loss. Those are different problems with different solutions.
What Areas Does Botox Treat?
Forehead Lines
Horizontal lines across the forehead form from raising the eyebrows repeatedly over years. Botox relaxes the frontalis muscle responsible, softening the lines without removing the ability to show expression entirely when dosed correctly.
Frown Lines (Glabella)
The vertical lines between the eyebrows, often called the elevens, come from the muscles used when frowning or concentrating. This is one of the most commonly treated areas because these lines can make a person look angry or tired even at rest.
Crow's Feet
The fine lines at the outer corners of the eyes form from smiling and squinting. Botox here softens the lines without affecting the natural smile.
Bunny Lines
Smaller lines that appear on the sides of the nose when scrunching the face. Less commonly requested but easily treated in the same session.
Botox vs HIFU vs Microneedling: Why the Distinction Matters
This is the question we get asked the most, and the confusion is understandable because all three are marketed as anti-aging treatments.
Botox relaxes muscles. It treats expression lines caused by repeated movement. It does not lift sagging skin or rebuild collagen.
HIFU lifts and tightens. It targets the structural SMAS layer beneath the skin, the same layer surgeons work on during a facelift, and stimulates collagen production over several months. See our HIFU North York and HIFU Richmond Hill pages for the full breakdown.
Microneedling rebuilds texture and treats scarring. It creates controlled micro-injuries that trigger collagen production at a more superficial level, useful for acne scars and overall skin quality rather than expression lines or sagging. Full details on our microneedling North York and microneedling Richmond Hill pages.
Many clients use more than one. Botox for the forehead and frown lines, HIFU for jawline and neck lifting, microneedling for overall texture. They solve different problems and layer well together.
How Long Does Botox Take to Work?
Days 1 to 3
Nothing visible yet. The toxin is beginning to bind to nerve endings but the muscle is still functioning close to normal.
Days 4 to 7
The effect starts becoming noticeable. Movement in the treated area softens. Most clients see early changes by day five.
Days 10 to 14
Full results are visible. This is when most people decide if the dose was right for them, and any minor touch-ups are usually done around this point.
Months 3 to 4
The effect begins to wear off gradually as nerve signaling returns to the muscle. This is the standard window before a repeat treatment is needed.
How Long Does Botox Last?
Most clients see results lasting three to four months. First-time clients sometimes notice the effect fading slightly faster, around the ten to twelve week mark, because the muscle has not yet adjusted to repeated treatment. Clients who maintain regular sessions over a year or more often find the muscle weakens slightly with consistent use, occasionally stretching the gap between sessions a little longer.
Is Botox Painful?
The injections use a very fine needle and most clients describe the sensation as a quick pinch rather than significant pain. A full treatment session, including all areas, typically takes ten to fifteen minutes. There is no need for numbing cream for most clients, though it can be requested for sensitive individuals.
What Does Recovery Look Like?
There is no real downtime. Most clients return to work or normal activities immediately after treatment.
A few practical guidelines help the results settle properly. Avoid lying down flat for four hours after treatment. Avoid vigorous exercise for the rest of the day. Avoid touching or massaging the treated area for several hours, since this can shift the product before it fully sets.
Mild redness or small bumps at the injection sites are common and usually resolve within an hour.
How Much Does Botox Cost in Toronto?
Pricing for Botox varies based on the number of units required, which depends on the area treated and the strength of the muscles involved. The forehead, frown lines, and crow's feet are the three most commonly requested areas and are often treated together in a single session.
At Sonia Cosmetic Clinic, pricing is confirmed at your consultation once Maryam assesses your muscle strength and the result you are looking for. This ensures you are quoted for what you actually need, not a flat package that may use more or less product than necessary.
Who Should Avoid Botox?
Botox is not suitable for everyone. It should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Clients with certain neuromuscular conditions, active skin infections at the injection site, or known allergies to any ingredient in the formulation should not proceed without a full medical discussion. Maryam reviews your health history at consultation to confirm suitability before any treatment begins.
