What Is PDRN?
PDRN stands for Polydeoxyribonucleotide. It is a biological compound derived from salmon DNA. The molecular structure of salmon DNA is remarkably similar to human DNA, which is why it has been used in medical research and wound healing for decades before making its way into aesthetic treatments.
In skin care, PDRN works through two main mechanisms.
First, it activates adenosine A2A receptors in the skin, which triggers a regenerative response. The body recognises PDRN as a signal to repair and rebuild damaged tissue, stimulating fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin.
Second, PDRN has anti-inflammatory properties. It reduces the inflammatory response in damaged skin tissue, which means the healing process after treatment is more efficient and the downtime is typically shorter than with treatments that trigger a stronger inflammatory response.
The result is skin that rebuilds collagen faster, heals more cleanly, and shows improvement in texture, hydration, and elasticity that goes beyond what standard microneedling alone produces.
How Is PDRN Microneedling Different from Standard Microneedling?
Standard microneedling works by creating thousands of microscopic channels in the dermis. Those channels trigger the skin's wound healing response, which includes collagen and elastin production. The result is gradual improvement in texture, scarring, and overall skin quality.
PDRN microneedling does the same thing, but adds a bioactive serum infused directly through those open channels during or immediately after the needling process.
Because the channels are freshly created, absorption is significantly higher than topical application alone. The PDRN reaches the dermis where it needs to work rather than sitting at the surface. This is the key difference: standard microneedling relies entirely on the trauma response to stimulate collagen. For clients dealing with significant laxity alongside scarring, RF microneedling is usually the stronger choice. For clients whose primary concern is skin quality, radiance, and biological regeneration rather than tightening, PDRN microneedling is often the better fit. What Does a PDRN Microneedling Session Look Like?
The session follows a similar process to standard microneedling with one key addition.
A topical numbing cream is applied thirty to forty-five minutes before the session begins. Once the skin is numb, Maryam uses a sterile microneedling device across the treatment area, creating the micro-channels at the appropriate depth for your skin concern.
The PDRN serum is then applied and worked into the skin while the channels are open, maximising absorption directly into the dermis. The session takes approximately sixty minutes for a full face treatment.
After the session, skin will appear pink or flushed, similar to mild sunburn. This settles within twenty-four to forty-eight hours. Most clients return to normal activities the following day.
How Many Sessions Do You Need?
For general skin quality improvement and early-stage concerns, a series of three sessions spaced four weeks apart produces visible, cumulative results. Skin continues improving between sessions as the PDRN-triggered collagen production matures.
For more significant scarring or advanced skin quality concerns, four to six sessions produce more comprehensive results. Maryam will assess your skin at consultation and recommend a realistic protocol rather than an open-ended series.
How Long Do PDRN Microneedling Results Last?
Results from a full PDRN microneedling protocol are long-lasting because they come from genuine collagen rebuilding rather than a surface treatment effect. Most clients maintain their results with one or two sessions per year after completing their initial protocol.
The combination of improved collagen density and better skin hydration from the PDRN itself tends to keep the skin in better condition between sessions compared to standard microneedling maintenance.
